Comment: You don't need a book to tell you how to get a job. Esp this kind of job.
I've worked for both the cruise lines as well as been a member of the SIU (Seafarers International Union). If you want to work on a cruise line, go online and look up all their 800 numbers and call them. Find out where and who they are hiring. You may have to go to their offices for an interview, but usually they won't have you go across country until they are actually going to offer you a job. Now, the SIU. This is a different story all together. There is only 1 cruise company in the United States that owns US Flagged ships and that is the ships that sail in the Hawaiian Islands. They employ SIU members. You have to be a union member to get jobs on these ships. You contact the company and once they say they will hire you, (this is for steward dept jobs only - waiters, bedroom attendants, etc. Deck Dept and Engine Dept must have degrees from maritime academies/schools) and they will tell you how to go about getting membership into the union. Union officials will not let you into the union without a job offer of a US Flagged Vessel/Company.
All the other cruise ship companies fly foreign flags of convenience (for tax purposes as well as other $ reasons). Many of their headquarters are stationed in the US, but you do not need to be a member of the SIU.
The only other way to get accepted into the SIU is to go to school. Many schools offer AB classes (deck), Engine classes (Engine Dept) and Steward jobs are placed right out of the SIU School which is located in Piney Point MD (Harry Lundeburg School of Seamanship). They have a training program. So see, you don't need to buy a book. I just told you all of it.
