Summary: A lot is said, very little seems to happen
Comment: *To be fair, this is a review of the ABRIDGED version of the audiobook*
Not my kind of story, but I can see where it would appeal to a lot of people. It's very character-driven, and part of my problem is that I wasn't particularly fond of any of the characters. Perhaps that's the point, I'm not sure. It's a story about things that happen to people as opposed to a story about things happening, if that makes sense. The things that happened in the book, though interesting, seemed to take a backseat to the people. Like everything was happening at a distance and all you got were the faint echoes, mentioned in passing. The core of the story was... well, I suppose it was the people, though it didn't even feel like I was getting that in-depth of a view of them - that will teach me to check if the audiobook is abridged or not (though to be honest I'm not sure I could sit through any more of it).
Fans of movies like Little Miss Sunshine would probably love this book, it seemed to me they are very similar types of stories. If you're into odd characters and a rather detached story-telling, this book is for you. If you're more like me and like a plot-driven story, this might both perplex and bore you.

I've read the book and even viewed the film version of this touching story, but I never really enjoyed it as much, or appreciated the beauty of it until I listened to this beautiful read on this audio book edition.
He is the definitve loser. The big "L". He's timid, an underachiever, drifts from job to job, and even lacks in the looks department. He seems to ache for love and let's his cheating wife walk all over him. He's Quoyle. No first name, just Quoyle. What Quoyle does have, is two little girls, who love him and a big heart that is tied up in knots and needs to be opened.
When the wife is lost in an auto accident, Quoyle is on his own to try to rebuild his life, and care for his daughters. Drowning in his own misery, a domineering Aunt takes charge and wisks them all off to the home of the Quoyle's, a rugged little fishing town in Newfoundland. The town is one where everbody knows everbody and they all have tales of yore to tell. After Quoyle lands a job with the local newspaper, he soon becomes part of the big family of friends and neighbors. The town has quite a few local characters that add quite a bit of humor and history to the story.
Paul Hecht does a marvelous reading. He brings the characters and the stark but beautiful surroundings of the coastal area to life. Reading all the parts, he uses just the right amount of inflections, accents, and adds just the right personality to everyone from the brooding Quoyle, to the outspoken Aunt, the colorful characters involved, and even does an outstanding take on the little girls.
Each chapter opens with a brief introduction, usually of some intricate knot used by sailors and fisherman(most often from "The Ashley Book of Knots"), which seem to hold some life secrets and, parallells the life changing events Quoyle is going through. As the story unfolds, we can see the gradual progress of Quoyle's big heart opening up to love, and becoming the man he has inside of him.
This unabridged edition(Recorded Books, Inc) is the way to go. The ISBN is 0788703439. I have included that number because there are so many editions of this book(if interested in this edition, check the ISBN on the product page or enter the number in the search menu). There are 9 two sided casettes, running about 45 minutes per side for a total of about 13 hours of pure listening enjoyment. I did not want it to end! Each tape lets you know where it begins(on side A) and ends(on side B) The tape quality is excellent, clean and clear for the most part. I had a little trouble with the second side of the last tape, the sound drifted in and out at a couple of points, but I purchased this set used, so it could be just mine, but I couldn't say for sure. It wasn't anything that would take away from the enjoyment of the story though. The case has a compartment for each casette.
