Summary: A Rip Roaring Tale of the French Counter-Revolution
Comment: I was brought up with the interpretation that the Princes of the French Royal House were brutal tyrants who brought the Revolution on themselves and deserved everything they got. It was an illusion that this book would shatter forever. The French Revolution was, in effect, a rising of middle class intellectuals against their rightful Sovereign, a rising that sank into a reign of depravity without precedent before the rise of Hitler and Stalin. It would birth an institution widely despised by the very peasants it was meant to serve. Infuriated by the corruption of the "Revolutionaries" and determined to avoid being dragooned into the Army, the French peasants of the Vendee and the Province of Brittany would wage an open rebellion. It is the first mentioned province that the late Mr. Davies chose to emphasise. Traditionally they have been dismissed by leftist historians as ignorant peasants manipulated by their landlords and priests. This is a conclusion that Michael Davies demolishes with this book. For one thing, the peasants usually APPROACHED the landlords and ASKED for their leadership, a position the nobles were often desperate to avoid. For another, the supreme commander of the Vendean "Generals" was Jean-Nicholas Stofflet, a commoner who had served as gamekeeper to the Count de Colbert a Maulevrier. According to Davies, ir says much of the spirit of these Royalist guerillas that the nobles were willing to serve under a peasant. The tale begins as an almost amusing saga of Royalist peasants gaining victory after victory over the often bumbling French Army. But when the Revolutionary authorities begin sinking to genocide and mass murder to smoke them out, the book changes focus completely. The French Revolution was nothing less than a war against the Catholic Faith and when Vendean civilians began to be murdered en masse, the Royalist guerillas began to be motivated by cold, hard fury, waging a war without quarter against the Revolutionary authorities. It is a tale that would make a very powrful big screen epic and I hope that the one person who could do it justice is reading this. Therefore, Mel Gibson, at least consider this book as your next project!
