Someone once said of Bolero that she was "the best of her class" a glistening, black 73-foot yawl that became an icon within weeks of her launching in 1949. This book is about this sleek boat, and also about the community of brilliant, caring men and women around her. It is also an intimate story of passionate craftsmanship on shore and afloat and of laughter and triumph, dismay and abject failure. After nearly wrecking on Cape Hatteras and rotting in a Florida canal, she was restored by Ed Kane and Marty Wallace and after 40 years, Bolero returned to the racecourse in 2004 and won six of her first 13 races.

Summary: A lovely sailing book
Comment: This is a lovely book. It spends considerable time on the people who built the classic yawl, Bolero. John Nicholas Brown, the original owner, was an interesting man who could afford to build a classic yacht. Ed Kane, the man who restored her, could afford to bring her back from a near derelict condition. Those of us who could not afford such a yacht can enjoy the story because many of the characters in it are not rich men or even sailors. The boat builders, like the nearly blind Norwegian who lofted the lines for the builder, Henry Nevins, make the story more than about a boat. Lofting means laying out the full size lines on an enormous floor to ensure that the drawings, which are by necessity small scale, do not contain any awkward angles or bumps in the hull. As the lofting man, Halvorson, says, the width of a pencil line can become an inch or two in the full size hull. Then there is the man who can tell proper white oak for keels by blowing through a straw against the wood. If the bubbles aren't right it doesn't go in the boat.

I have been sailing over 50 years and have sailed across oceans. I enjoyed this book especially because it spent so much time on details of construction and the story of the design. I recently noticed that there is what looks like a 106 foot replica, also named Bolero, for sale in Monaco. That would be an interesting story. This boat has an appeal far beyond the usual story of a racing yacht. I would not take the time to read about one of the new carbon fiber racing shells that can go 30 knots but have no place to sit down or lie down. This great yacht is sailing again and this is a wonderful story. John Rousmaniere has written another fine book, worthy to sit beside his Bermuda Race book.

Summary: A must read for wood boat lovers over forty
Comment: John Rousmaniere has written a well-researched history of the initial creation and life to present day of the famous yawl Bolero. He includes a background of the Brown family, Olin and Rod Stephens, Henry Nevins and others. It is well-written in a concise, informative style with many captioned photographs and drawings making a book that can just be picked up and browsed or a good cover-to-cover read.

As a self-confessed boat nut and as one who witnessed Bolero and Baruna racing in San Francisco in the 60's, I came away with a new found appreciation of the detail involved in the design and building of such a yacht as well as the commitment and money required to maintain such a vessel. All-in-all, a thoroughly enjoyable book and one that I'll be happily loaning out to like-minded friends. Highly recommended.
