Everything changed on the morning of December 7, 1941, and life in San Francisco was no exception. Flush with excitement and tourism in the wake of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, the city was stunned at the severity of the Pearl Harbor attack, and quickly settled into organized chaos with its new role as a major deployment center for the remainder of the war. “Frisco” teemed with servicemen and servicewomen during and after the conflict, forever changing the face of this waterfront city. Warships roamed the bay, and fearsome gun embankments appeared on the cliffs facing the sea, preparing to repel an invasion that never happened.

Summary: Some great photos, but several are off-topic.
Comment: From a great cover shot of Market Street on V-J Day, the author
sets the scene nicely with some vintage pre-War images, including
one of Joe DiMaggio and his parents, along with an interesting story
about them from a news account of the time. Later, there was an
excellent 2-page letter from a father to his son, and several warm,
highly nostalgic family shots from individual collections, but these
are too few and far between. Compared to other Arcadia books in
this series, many of the photos in this book are simply not from
"World War II in San Francisco".
As early as page 18, we are yanked out of 1941 with a fast-forward
to the year 2004 and a picture of couple of veterans at a reunion.
The photo narrative then returns to the first few days after Pearl
Harbor and defense preparations, when suddenly there is a photo
of gangster Al Capone, noting that he once did servicemen's laundry
while serving time on Alcatraz, but also indicating that Capone left
the prison in 1938, which is well before the War began. Tucked in
between early 1942 photos of a sandbagged City Hall and another
showing hundreds of Emporium employees gathered in that great
old store's main aisle for a bond rally (both excellent pictures that
vividly convey emotion), there is a 1989 shot of a one-time medical
officer who worked in the Ordnance Department when it occupied
the Cow Palace (1960s photo) in the War's later years.
There were parade photos from Australia, 9 images of activities
at St. Mary's College and elsewhere in the town of Moraga, and
then, fast-forward to a 2006 picture of a retired marine at the
USS San Francisco Memorial. The victory parade shots near the
end of the book end are inexplicably interrupted with another
time-warp showing a child serving food to other youngsters on
the USS Hornet in 2003.
There are many wonderful photos here, but too many of them are
off-topic for a book with the title "San Francisco in World War II".

Summary: Excellent new original photos of San Fran during WWII
Comment: Great new previously-unseen photos of San Francisco during the World War II era. My mother says this book brings back memories that she hadn't had for years. This was a time of great challenge, tragedy, sorrow, and opportunity. It is worth studying. Great compilation and research by John Garvey. Highly recommended.
