Fisherman’s Wharf is San Francisco’s top tourist destination, but its history is much richer and more important than today’s quaint attractions suggest. Indeed, many of these well-known sights were developed only in the last few decades. The early wharf, originally known as Meigg’s Wharf, was once the main port of entry to San Francisco and an extremely industrious place. Lumber, food, and immigrants all arrived here, and railroads came right to the water’s edge to pick up building supplies for the rapidly growing city. Hardworking fishermen, both Chinese and Italian (who were often accompanied by their wives), set out to make a living by catching fish and crab in small vessels built at the wharf.

Summary: Fisherman's Wharf & North Beach
Comment: An outstanding compilation of photos and stories from Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach, Baccari's book starts where it should, Meigg's Wharf in 1853. It's great to see the multiple roots of this important landmark presented. Fisherman's Wharf was the commercial fishing center for the city but it was also a shipping port and an industrial food-processing region as well as always having been a tourist attraction.

I hung out there as a kid, fishing off Muni Pier and standing by when the fishing boats came in and unloaded their catch. The pages capture a lot of warm memories.

Like everything else in San Francisco, it continued to morph over time. Stressing the stories and key people as well as the landmarks, San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf is a key addition to a San Francisco history collection as well as a wonderful collector's book.

Summary: A 'must' for any in-depth San Francisco history collection
Comment: If your collection needs more local San Francisco-specific history, you can't go wrong with this coverage of one of the city's biggest tourist attractions, San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. An oversized format (well, oversized compared to Arcadia's usual smaller book size) succeeds in capturing Fisherman's Wharf in all its changing facets, using vintage black and white photos to display the evolution of the area from its origins as Meigg's wharf, once the main port of entry to San Francisco, to its current attraction to tourists. Many of these images haven't seen print before, and see print now thanks to the efforts of author Alessandro Baccari Jr, founder and president of the Fisherman's Wharf Historical Society. A 'must' for any in-depth San Francisco history collection, its contents are unparalleled despite the preponderance of San Francisco histories on the market.
